The Greek community of Detroit celebrated Greek Independence Day last March 25th with pride.

The celebration started at 3 in the afternoon. The Detroit parade kicked off on the historic Monroe Street in Greektown.

The temperature at that time was so cold but the people just ignored the frigid weather and still went out on the street to observe.

Incidentally, my colleagues and I were at the area during that time. We were lucky to have witnessed the social occasion.

The Greek Independence Parade drew a great crowd. The parade’s atmosphere was highlighted by the participants coming from various groups, schools, churches and associations all dressed in traditional costume.

Lots of blue and white flags were waved all along the street.

This parade is the community’s way of having fun and preserving the Hellenic heritage.
